Sunscreens That Are Allowed on the Coral Reef

Belize takes reef protection seriously. The Belize Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a major reason travelers visit — and certain sunscreens are restricted to protect it.

Harmful ingredients to avoid:

  • Oxybenzone
  • Octinoxate

These chemicals have been linked to coral bleaching and reef damage.

What to use instead:

  • Mineral (physical) sunscreens
  • Non-nano zinc oxide
  • Non-nano titanium dioxide

Look for labels that say “reef safe”, but don’t rely on marketing alone — check the active ingredients list.

Additional reef-friendly habits:

  • Wear UPF rash guards while snorkeling or diving.
  • Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before entering the water.
  • Reapply only when necessary.

By choosing reef-safe protection, you help preserve the beauty of Belize’s underwater ecosystems for future travelers and for the marine life that calls it home.
