How to Stop Those Pesky Mosquitos

Mosquitos are part of tropical life in Belize, especially near mangroves, lagoons, and during the rainy season (roughly June-November). Here’s how to keep them from ruining your evenings:

1. Use an effective repellent.
Look for EPA-approved ingredients such as:

  • DEET (20–30% for most travelers)
  • Picaridin
  • Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (PMD)

Apply after sunscreen and reapply according to label instructions.

2. Wear strategic clothing.
Lightweight long sleeves and pants during dusk and dawn significantly reduce bites. Neutral colors help too mosquitos are attracted to darker shades.

3. Avoid peak hours.
Mosquitos are most active at sunrise and sunset. Plan beach time mid-morning or early afternoon when possible.

4. Stay somewhere with airflow.
Ceiling fans, AC, and screened windows dramatically reduce mosquito activity indoors.

5. Eliminate standing water.
If you’re staying in a rental, make sure there’s no standing water in buckets or plant trays nearby.

A proactive approach means fewer itchy welts and better sleep — especially if you’re exploring coastal areas near the Belize Barrier Reef.
